“Not Unauthorized!” Samsung Electronics Responds to Dua Lipa’s $15 Million Lawsuit

On the 12th, Samsung Electronics released a statement regarding the lawsuit filed by Dua Lipa’s team over the unauthorized use of her image. They stated, “The claim that the artist’s image was used without permission is not true. We confirmed the usage rights for the image through a content provider partner before using it.”

Samsung Electronics further added, “We have been in continuous dialogue with Dua Lipa’s side until recently and will do our best to reach an amicable resolution.”

Earlier, on the 8th (local time), local media reported that Dua Lipa filed a lawsuit in the Central District Court of California for copyright and publicity rights infringement. The claim amount is reportedly around 15 million dollars (approximately 22 billion won).

According to the complaint, Samsung Electronics has used Dua Lipa’s image on its TV product packaging since last year. Dua Lipa’s team reportedly noticed this and requested that the image use stop, but Samsung Electronics allegedly ignored the request and continued using it without authorization.

Dua Lipa’s side claimed, “The facial photo was used in large-scale marketing without prior consent or consultation, and without any control. Dua Lipa never permitted the use of the image, and even if an offer had been made, she would not have approved it.”
