I am SOLO 31st Batch Hits Record Ratings Amid Drama, Hospital Trips, and Backstabbing, but Cast Faces Backlash

Malicious comments are pouring in for the cast of I am SOLO’s 31st batch. While the show managed to secure high ratings, a major fallout is expected.

According to Nielsen Korea on the 14th, the ENA and SBS Plus variety show I am SOLO recorded a 4.3% rating (national paid households), marking its highest peak this year.

The latest episode showcased the tangled love lines of the 31st batch. Jung-hee expressed dissatisfaction with Young-shik, who seemed torn between her and Jung-sook, while Young-sook showed signs of jealousy regarding Soon-ja and Kyung-soo.

The cast spent time getting to know each other through 1:1 or 2:1 dates and shared their honest feelings during personal interviews with the production team. However, Ok-soon’s screen time was drastically reduced.

Even during “girls’ talk” between roommates Jung-hee and Young-sook, Ok-soon’s remarks were barely included. Her 1:1 date with Young-ho was shorter than others, and she had no personal interview following the date.

Previously, Ok-soon was seen supporting Jung-hee and Young-sook with dating advice. However, it was revealed that they were talking behind Soon-ja’s back while she was in the next room, leading to a “Soon-ja bullying controversy.” This sparked a wave of malicious comments toward Ok-soon, and rumors that she might be completely edited out began circulating in online communities.

While the production team has not released an official statement on the editing, suspicions grew as over 30 minutes were dedicated to “Super Date” missions, such as memorizing the poem “Longing” and pansori dictation, while Young-sook’s screen time increased over Ok-soon’s. Netizens criticized the editing direction, asking, “Is Young-sook replacing Ok-soon?”

During a running mission to win a Super Date ticket, Young-sook fell and lost to Soon-ja. Back at the lodge, Ok-soon comforted her, saying, “In my heart, Young-sook is number one.” Young-sook, showing her injury, raised suspicions that she might have been tripped by someone.

Soon-ja, having overheard the “girls’ talk” targeting her, suffered from stomach cramps due to stress. In tears and distress, she was eventually transported to the hospital by ambulance. Viewers were outraged by the reactions of others: Jung-hee appeared surprised but said nothing, while Young-sook responded with, “What is this, it’s scary” and “Should I wail too?”

Following the broadcast, criticism of Young-sook and Jung-hee exploded across online communities and SNS. Malicious comments and concerned reactions continue to flood the comment section of the highlight video on the Chonjang Entertainment TV channel. One netizen pointed out the production team’s passive stance, stating, “It’s too violent. It’s creepy to just watch while someone is subjected to verbal abuse.”

I am SOLO is a reality dating show that captures the honest side of singles searching for love. However, this current controversy has highlighted cast members becoming targets of hate and a production team that seems to prioritize ratings above all else.
