Netflix’s ‘Wonderfools’ is finally meeting its viewers, despite the ‘Cha Eun-woo risk.’
Released on the 15th, ‘Wonderfools’ is a superpower comic adventure set in 1999. It follows a group of local goofballs who accidentally gain superpowers at the end of the century and struggle to save the world from villains threatening peace.
To help fans get the most out of the show, several key viewing points have been revealed.
First up is the unique genre-blending fun of ‘Wonderfools,’ where a group of clumsy underdogs team up to save the world. By depicting the chaotic events that unfold when imperfect people gain superpowers, the series delivers unpredictable excitement, hearty laughs, and warm empathy. Director Yoo In-sik, known for hits like ‘Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim’ and ‘Extraordinary Attorney Woo,’ aimed to create a story that leaves a pleasant lingering feeling after the action and comedy. From the visual thrill of superpowers to the emotional depth of a human drama, ‘Wonderfools’ has it all. Notably, during a production presentation on the 12th, Director Yoo In-sik addressed the ‘tax evasion controversy’ surrounding Cha Eun-woo, stating, “We proceeded with editing and post-production with the priority of ensuring the drama’s quality,” showing his determination to face the issue head-on.
The second highlight is the diverse chemistry between the unique characters. Park Eun-bin, Cha Eun-woo, Choi Dae-hoon, and Im Sung-jae, all loved for their versatile roles, play the ‘Haeseong City 4.’ They each possess different powers—teleportation, psychokinesis, stickiness, and super strength—and are expected to show unpredictable teamwork and fantastic chemistry. Adding to this, the strong presence of Kim Hae-sook and Son Hyun-joo anchors the plot, while Jung Yi-seo, Choi Yoon-ji, and Bae Na-ra bring tension and fresh energy as the ‘Wonderkinder’ trio. Don’t miss the rich chemistry, from the hilarious teamwork of the Haeseong City 4 to the heartwarming bond between grandmother and granddaughter, the relationship between Dr. Ha Won-do (Son Hyun-joo) and the ‘Wonderkinder’ fueled by blind faith, and the dynamics among the ‘Wonderkinder’ siblings.
Finally, the well-made production captures the end-of-the-century vibe through art, music, VFX, and cinematography. The art direction realistically recreates the late 90s landscape, dominated by apocalyptic theories, allowing viewers to fully immerse themselves in the world of ‘Wonderfools.’ From props like CD players and radios in ‘Chaeny’ (Park Eun-bin)’s room to graffiti murals throughout Haeseong City, the unique visuals perfectly capture the era’s sentiment. The sound design further enhances the experience, ranging from cute sound effects for superpower scenes to grand music that accompanies major events. Additionally, the VFX and special effects are flawlessly implemented to provide both visual satisfaction and high quality. With a dream team of creators handling direction, cinematography, and aesthetics, ‘Wonderfools’ is set to deliver a rich experience that satisfies all five senses.
