Yoo Jae Suk of ‘Yoo Jae Suk Camp’ has firmly addressed recent ‘network casting’ suspicions.
During the production presentation for Netflix’s new variety show ‘Yoo Jae Suk Camp’ on the morning of the 19th at the JW Marriott Dongdaemun Hotel in Jongno-gu, Seoul, Yoo Jae Suk emphasized, “I’m not casting based on my personal connections; I’m selecting people who are essential for the program.”
‘Yoo Jae Suk Camp’ is a grand group camping variety show where rookie camp manager Yoo Jae Suk, along with his unpredictable staff Lee Kwang Soo, Byeon Woo Seok, and Ji Ye Eun, will ‘chatter and play’ with their guests. This guesthouse-style variety show is generating buzz, as it marks another collaboration between PD Jung Hyo Min’s team, known for ‘Hyori’s Homestay’ and ‘Daehwanjang Gianjang,’ and Netflix.
The production team and cast of ‘Yoo Jae Suk Camp’ share a long history. Notably, PD Jung Hyo Min and Yoo Jae Suk have teamed up for various shows like ‘Sugar Man,’ ‘Workman,’ and ‘Korea No. 1.’ Furthermore, Yoo Jae Suk, who anchors the program, has frequently appeared in variety shows with Lee Kwang Soo and Ji Ye Eun. While these connections have sparked whispers of ‘network casting’ or ‘friendship recruitment,’ both the production team and Yoo Jae Suk strongly asserted that these choices were made for the program’s best interest.

PD Jung Hyo Min, who has known Yoo Jae Suk since his assistant director days, shared his philosophy on working with him again, stating, “I believe it’s about what new stories we can tell.” He continued, “Viewers won’t stick around if we just repeat the same old thing. I had a strong conviction and confidence that Yoo Jae Suk could bring a fresh and unique flavor to a guesthouse variety show, distinct from existing ones. We’ve dedicated the past year to bringing that vision to life, so please watch and judge for yourselves,” expressing confidence that even with Yoo Jae Suk, this new variety show would deliver fresh entertainment.
Yoo Jae Suk lauded the production team’s capabilities, remarking, “I’ve known PD Jung for about 15 years, and beyond our personal relationship, he’s a PD who has successfully helmed countless programs.” He then clarified his casting approach, explaining, “I’m not casting because of my personal connections; I’m selecting individuals who are truly necessary for the program.”
Yoo Jae Suk himself revealed that when offered a program, he carefully considers, ‘Can I truly excel at this?’ before making a decision. He stated, “While some might view this as casting based on personal connections, we have our own deep considerations and choices. Both the production team and the cast constantly ask, ‘Is there something new?’, ‘Is there something fresh?’. We believe our role is to continuously create that perfect blend of freshness and fun.”

‘Yoo Jae Suk Camp’ originated from a fascinating question: ‘What if Yoo Jae Suk became the owner of a guesthouse?’ This idea sparked during the production team’s discussions about expanding the guesthouse variety show genre. The team revealed that they built the rest of the cast around Yoo Jae Suk as the central figure.
PD Lee So Min explained, “When we brainstormed various combinations, Lee Kwang Soo was the first indispensable choice. Running simulations, it felt like the show simply couldn’t proceed without Kwang Soo. For Byeon Woo Seok, we hadn’t seen much of his true self since he doesn’t frequently appear on variety shows, but we sensed he possessed a humane and honest charm, making us eager to recruit him as a new member. Ji Ye Eun is the sole veteran staff member from ‘Daehwanjang Gianjang,’ and honestly, we didn’t necessarily expect her to be highly skilled; rather, we believed the fun would come from her ambiguous proficiency and an irreplaceable energy, which made us want to bring her on board.”
Despite the familiar cast lineup, the production team has promised a fresh narrative. PD Jung Hyo Min commented, “I believe it’s a challenging task to prevent familiarity from becoming boring. When a similar combination appears, the crucial factor seems to be whether we can deliver a new story or not.” He added, “We are confident that we have crafted a unique narrative from a familiar combination. We sincerely hope viewers will enjoy and appreciate it.”
‘Yoo Jae Suk Camp’ is set to premiere on Netflix over two weeks, with episodes 1-5 dropping on the 26th, followed by episodes 6-10 on June 2nd.
