NCT 127 is standing at the steepest turning point since the team’s formation. While they prepare for a comeback after about two years alongside member Jaehyun’s discharge, the team’s composition is distinctly different from before. Under SM Entertainment’s ‘SM NEXT 3.0’ strategy, NCT 127 now faces the challenge of proving their identity amidst a drastic shift to a 5-member system.
With NCT member Jaehyun completing his military service and being discharged on the 3rd, NCT 127’s comeback stage is drawing near. This return holds more meaning than just releasing an album. Although it’s been about two years since their 6th full-length album ‘Walk’ in July 2024, the NCT 127 fans will encounter is closer to a ‘reorganization’ than a ‘full group.’ Amidst the cracks of the familiar 9-member system, the public and fandom are watching their next steps with a mix of anticipation and concern.

Taeil’s Expulsion and Mark’s Departure… A Painful Lineup Change
The biggest variable is undoubtedly the change in member composition. Following Taeil, who left the team last August due to a criminal case related to sex crimes, core member Mark also chose a new challenge and left the team in April upon the expiration of his exclusive contract. Considering that Doyoung and Jungwoo are currently serving in the military, this round of activities is expected to proceed with a 5-member system consisting of Johnny, Yuta, Taeyong, Jaehyun, and Haechan.
The weight of these absences is not light. The absence of Taeil, the main vocal, and Mark, the main rapper who led the team’s musical color, necessitates a complete reorganization of positions. In the vocal line, Haechan’s unique tone and the stable live performance of ‘all-rounder’ Jaehyun are expected to hold the center. In particular, Jaehyun has emerged as a key card to fill the gaps in the team, taking on an expanded role spanning both vocals and rap in his post-discharge return.
The rap line also requires inevitable restructuring. With Taeyong’s shoulders growing heavier due to Mark’s departure, the key will be whether Johnny and Yuta can handle a larger portion of the rap parts than before to maintain NCT 127’s signature ‘Neo’ flavor.

From 9-Member Performances to 5… A Test of Structural Improvement
Major changes are also expected in terms of performance. NCT 127 has previously dominated the stage with synchronized dancing and dynamic formations utilizing a large number of members. Since such a ‘power-in-numbers’ approach is impossible in a 5-member system, they must completely modify the choreography of their existing hits and showcase a new performance strategy optimized for five members at their concert scheduled for the third quarter.
The production team’s directorial ingenuity is also a point of interest. Just as VCRs or pre-recorded vocals were used to fill the stage during previous member absences, technical and creative attempts are expected to continue to fill the void left by Doyoung and Jungwoo.
However, some analyze that this crisis could actually be an ‘opportunity’ for individual members. As the number of members decreases, the parts assigned to each person and their screen time on stage will increase significantly. Members who previously had only about 20 seconds in some songs now have a stepping stone to more clearly imprint their capabilities during these activities.
Overcoming the Unfamiliarity of ‘NCT 127 Without Mark’
The biggest task is erasing the ‘unfamiliarity’ for the public. To fans who remember the synergy of the 9-member group, a 5-member NCT 127 might risk feeling ‘incomplete.’ In particular, how they offset the absence of Mark, who was a symbolic presence for the team, with musical perfection will be the key indicator of this comeback’s success.
These activities are not just a simple return for NCT 127, but the ‘start of Act 2.’ It is important to shift the frame from ‘downsizing’ due to member loss to an ‘evolution’ with a new color. The music industry is focusing its attention on NCT 127’s ‘Neo’ musical experiments as they bloom once again amidst the crisis.
