“Is Being a Celebrity a Privilege?” Ki Eun-se Sparks Controversy Over Pyeongchang-dong Home Construction Complaints

A netizen, referred to as “A,” took to social media on the 27th of last month to express their frustration, stating, “I came back to my parents’ home in Pyeongchang-dong after living in the US, and the construction site next door is just unbelievable.”

A complained that the alley in front of the house has been occupied by construction vehicles for months because an actress is moving in, making it difficult for residents to even pass through. They also pointed out that the area is filled with construction waste and dust, with no proper cleaning being done.

Previously, Ki Eun-se shared updates on her YouTube channel about preparing to move into a house in Pyeongchang-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul.

A added, “My parents have been silently enduring it, thinking it’s better to stay on good terms with neighbors, but as their child watching from the side, it’s absolutely frustrating.” They claimed that while they were initially told the work would end in mid-April, the date was pushed to mid-May, or left vague.

A further criticized the situation, asking, “It seems they are trying to brush off these inconveniences just because they are a celebrity. Where does this sense of privilege come from, thinking the sacrifice of neighbors is natural?” They emphasized that basic common sense and courtesy toward neighbors should come before building a fancy house, noting that just because parents stay quiet doesn’t mean their suffering is acceptable.

The post spread across social media and online communities, sparking a heated debate. Some netizens reacted by saying, “Do they think being a celebrity is some kind of rank?” and “It’s a nuisance when it goes too far,” suggesting a report to the district office.

Criticism also flooded Ki Eun-se’s YouTube comments, with users saying, “You should take care of your neighbors first,” and “Looking at the photos, this is beyond a nuisance and is at a reportable level.” On the other hand, some defended her, saying, “Let’s be patient with neighbors’ big events” and “Isn’t a full renovation inevitable for someone moving in?”

On the 28th of last month, A posted an update, saying, “Thank you for the interest in my venting. I received an apology via DM. It’s a bit bittersweet that they only moved now after I spoke to the staff before with no result. I hope we become a society that considers one another more.”

However, on the 30th, A shared photos of the construction vehicles again, complaining that “there seems to be no will to improve” and that it’s still hard for cars to leave the alley.

Later, A shared that the site manager visited after the photos were posted and promised to fix the parking and waste issues. The construction is set to continue until the 15th, followed by separate parking lot work. A expressed hope that the project would finish smoothly without further conflict.

Regarding this, Ki Eun-se’s agency, Sublime, told Star News, “We are currently organizing an official position.”
