. Provided by Walt Disney Company Korea”/>Disney+, the global over-the-top (OTT) service, has edited certain scenes from the drama <21st Century Grand Prince's Wife> that sparked a controversy over historical distortion.
In episode 11 of <21st Century Grand Prince's Wife> on Disney+, the audio and subtitles for “Cheonse” shouted by attendees during Prince Ian’s (Byeon Woo-seok) coronation have been removed. While the scene of the attendees bowing remains, the voices are gone, leaving only the background music.
Shouting “Cheonse” during a royal coronation was a custom of the Joseon Dynasty. However, this etiquette was suited for a vassal state. Critics pointed out that recreating this in a modern setting, where Korea and China are equal diplomatic partners, is inappropriate. After Joseon transitioned into the Korean Empire, “Manse” was used instead of “Cheonse.”
After the scene aired on MBC on the 15th and caused an uproar, the production team and lead actors issued apologies. Additionally, the cyber diplomatic group VANK sent a letter to Wavve and Disney+, where the drama is streaming, on the 17th requesting the scene be corrected.
VANK has a history of correcting errors, such as when the East Sea was labeled as the “Sea of Japan” in the French subtitles of the Netflix drama
