Rapper BewhY has found himself at the center of a political controversy.
On May 8, BewhY released the music video for his new song “SOUTHSIDE FREESTYLE” on his official channels. Right at the start, the intro features a voice recording of the late former President Syngman Rhee saying, “It is news of life, it is news of freedom.” The track has also grabbed attention for lyrics that evoke specific political ideologies, including lines like “If I were good, I would have knelt before the sickle and hammer” and “In my voice success, in the beauty’s voice anti-communism.”
After listening to the song, some netizens left supportive comments, saying things like, “He speaks up when everyone else is silent,” “I’m grateful he doesn’t kneel before the sickle and hammer. I support him,” “I’m moved to hear the voice of the founding father, President Syngman Rhee,” “He’s really targeting communism,” and “It’s so cool how he sticks to his beliefs no matter what people around him say.” On the other hand, some critics argue that using a song accessible to the general public fuels political conflict.
This isn’t the first time BewhY has openly shared his strong convictions. Back in March, he drew attention by sharing a post about current elementary school sex education. The shared material explained that “sex is used in various meanings,” mentioning both biological sex (based on reproductive organs and physical differences) and social sex (the criteria for judging men and women socially and culturally), emphasizing that it is important to understand the various aspects of sex rather than simply dividing them.
BewhY reacted strongly to the content, asking, “Are they sane? Is it illegal for educators to be educated?” He further solidified his stance by quoting Bible verses, such as “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” and “Jesus replied, ‘Haven’t you read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female?'”
