Psy Opens Up About ‘Gangnam Style’ Success: “A Dream and a Nightmare”

Psy Opens Up About 'Gangnam Style' Success:

Psy has opened up about the mix of happiness and immense pressure that came with the global success of his hit song ‘Gangnam Style’.

He shared these thoughts during a conversation with Korean-American actor Daniel Dae Kim in the new CNN International documentary ‘K-Everything’, which aired on the 9th.

Released in 2012, ‘Gangnam Style’ became a worldwide phenomenon, making history as the first music video to surpass 1 billion views within just six months. It significantly boosted the global status of K-pop, particularly in the US market.

Reflecting on the hit, Psy confessed, “As a singer, I’ve enjoyed it for a lifetime, but as a songwriter, it’s both a dream and a nightmare.” He added that he constantly wonders, “How can I create something even better than this?”

Psy also recalled a touching story about Tiger JK, who once called him while crying after pulling his car over to the side of a highway.

Tiger JK was reportedly deeply moved, asking if Psy knew what it meant for Korean-American people to hear a song with entirely Korean lyrics playing on US radio. Daniel Dae Kim admitted that just thinking about it makes him emotional.

However, when it comes to the ‘Gangnam Style’ statue in Gangnam, Seoul, Psy admitted, “To be honest, personally, I feel shy and it feels like too much for me.”

Following the massive success of ‘Gangnam Style’, Psy founded his own agency, P Nation, and established himself as the icon of summer concerts with his hit annual ‘Summershow’.

Describing ‘Summershow’ as the “peak of happiness,” he shared, “When I perform in front of 25,000 people, I see 25,000 faces happy because of me. In those moments, I feel like I could die without any regrets.”
