There is another villain in the hit drama ‘Scarecrow’ making everyone’s blood boil! Kim Eun-woo has officially become a rage-inducing villain.
In the May 12 episode of ENA’s Monday-Tuesday drama ‘Scarecrow’ (Directed by Park Jun-woo, Written by Lee Ji-hyun), actor Kim Eun-woo delivered a despicable performance as Detective Do Hyung-gu of the Gangseong Police Station.
Do Hyung-gu has established himself as a key villain in ‘Scarecrow,’ sparking anger through his harsh investigations, false testimonies, and the sheer irony of being nominated for a commendation.
In episodes 7 and 8, Do Hyung-gu and Jang Myung-do (played by Jeon Jae-hong) were revealed as the figures behind the illegal arrest and torture of Lee Ki-bum (played by Song Geon-hee). After pushing Lee Ki-bum to the brink of death, Do Hyung-gu tried to minimize his mistakes during the audit and played the humble card in front of Cha Si-young (played by Lee Hee-jun) to escape responsibility. His cowardly excuse, “I only committed the sin of faithfully carrying out what the prosecutor ordered,” left viewers absolutely fuming.
The cowardice didn’t stop there. During the audit team’s investigation, Do Hyung-gu shifted the blame by falsely testifying that Kang Tae-joo (played by Park Hae-soo) had assaulted Lee Ki-bum, leading to Kang Tae-joo receiving an unfair disciplinary action. This proved that Do Hyung-gu isn’t just a rough detective, but someone who survives by hiding behind power.
Following Lee Ki-bum, Do Hyung-gu displayed an oppressive and violent attitude during the forced interrogation of Im Seok-man (played by Baek Seung-hwan). The scene where he pushed the exhausted Seok-man and forced the terrified man back up showed that violence is practically a habit for him. His duality—being brutal to the weak and cowardly before the powerful—heightened the uncomfortable tension of the show.
The peak of the irony was the commendation scene. Do Hyung-gu was named as a model civil servant for his role in capturing the culprit of the Gangseong serial murder case. Seeing a torturer be honored as a hero added a bitter layer to the twisted sense of justice in the story.
Kim Eun-woo perfectly captured Do Hyung-gu’s exaggerated violence and cowardice through distinct tonal shifts. He used a rough, shouting tone to pressure Im Seok-man, while adopting a completely humbled posture in front of Cha Si-young to show his survival instinct. By portraying these contrasting temperatures, Kim Eun-woo has completed the image of a perfect villain.
