'90s Jennie' Hwang Hye-young Opens Up About Meningioma Diagnosis and Battle with Depression on 'Perfect Life'

On TV CHOSUN’s ‘Perfect Life,’ Hwang Hye-young, a member of the popular 90s co-ed group Two Two, shares a treasure trove of stories from her heyday.

As the “original pocket girl” Hwang Hye-young appeared, MC Hyun Young called her the “90s Jennie.” Hwang Hye-young brought laughter to the set by singing Two Two’s hit song ‘One and a Half’ with her signature expressionless face. She surprised everyone by revealing, “During my peak, I had 11 to 12 schedules a day. I even traveled by helicopter and motorcycle to save time.” She added, “During rush hour when traffic was bad, I even took a boat on the Han River to get to my schedules.”

When comedian Lee Sung-mi asked if she was popular at military consolation performances, Hwang Hye-young recalled a memorable moment. “I appeared on ‘Stage of Friendship,’ and Two Two performed right before the ending act, Seo Taiji and Boys. As Seo Taiji was coming off stage, he told me, ‘I can’t beat you guys here,'” she shared, recalling the moment her popularity was recognized.

Hwang Hye-young also opened up about her past health struggles. “In the past, I ran a shopping mall and had so much work that I couldn’t sleep. I lived in a state of high stress and tension,” she said. “Because of that lifestyle, I was diagnosed with a meningioma in 2010.” She confessed her feelings at the time, saying, “After the diagnosis, I felt empty and hollow, thinking, ‘Why did this happen to me? I lived my life so diligently…’ and I even suffered from depression.”

When Lee Sung-mi mentioned that her husband must have been very shocked, Hwang Hye-young revealed, “That happened only a month after I met my husband. At the time, I told him I didn’t want surgery and just wanted to let go, but my husband scheduled the surgery, had me hospitalized, and took care of me.” Her expression of gratitude toward her husband left everyone deeply moved. The episode airs on the 13th at 8 PM.
