Negative reactions are pouring in following Chef Ahn Sung-jae’s announcement to take a break from his channel after being swept up in a “wine swap” controversy.
On the 13th, the ‘Chef Ahn Sung-jae’ channel stated, “The production team intends to take some time to reorganize the channel’s direction, overall operation, and careful content production.” They added, “We will strive to return with a more responsible image and better content for those who have cherished and watched the channel.”
Netizens are not seeing the term “reorganization” in a positive light. Some are voicing sharp criticism, with comments like, “I think it’s more accurate to call it a period of self-reflection,” and “Isn’t stopping activities without an official explanation essentially avoidance?”
This all started on the 21st of last month when allegations surfaced online that a “wine swap” occurred at Restaurant Mosu, operated by Chef Ahn Sung-jae. The author of the post claimed, “I ordered a 2000 Chateau Léoville Barton, but I was actually served the 2005 vintage, which is about 100,000 won cheaper.”
As the controversy spread, Mosu issued an official apology two days later. Even after further attempts to resolve the situation, another controversy erupted when it was revealed that Chef Ahn Sung-jae uploaded a video to his personal channel on the very day of the apology. This led some netizens to question the sincerity of the apology.
Ahn Sung-jae has built a reputation among foodies for his artistic plating and creative cooking style. He gained massive public popularity as a judge on the Netflix show ‘Culinary Class Wars,’ where he became known for his sharp palate, direct evaluations, and various viral catchphrases.
