'Gunche' Hits Cannes and Heads to 124 Countries Worldwide!

On the 6th, distributor Showbox announced that Director Yeon Sang-ho’s new film ‘Gunche’, which was officially invited to the Midnight Screening section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival, has been pre-sold to 124 countries ahead of its domestic release on the 21st.

‘Gunche’ is a movie where isolated survivors inside a building locked down due to a mysterious infection event face off against infected individuals who evolve in unpredictable ways.

‘Gunche’ is highly anticipated as the latest zombie film from Director Yeon Sang-ho, known as a master of the genre with hits like ‘Train to Busan’ and ‘Peninsula’. It also boasts a star-studded cast, including Jun Ji-hyun, who returns to the big screen after 11 years, along with Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Shin Hyun-bin, Kim Shin-rok, and Go Soo.

Doris Pfardrescher, CEO of North American distributor Well Go, which also distributed ‘Train to Busan’ and ‘Peninsula’, stated, “The reason we chose ‘Gunche’ is because of Director Yeon Sang-ho’s proven ability to direct high-quality commercial films, as seen in his previous works.”

Taiwan’s distributor Movie Cloud noted, “It was clear that ‘Gunche’ takes a new approach that previous zombie genres haven’t attempted. It was very interesting that the infected are portrayed not just as a chaotic horde of zombies, but as a ‘swarm’ with evolving intelligence.” Meanwhile, Germany’s Plaion Pictures shared, “Director Yeon Sang-ho has recreated a sub-genre of film with his own original and unconventional zombie trilogy. With this work, he has reached the peak and completed another masterpiece that will set a new standard for years to come. ‘Gunche’ is undoubtedly the most enjoyable experience among his works, providing pure pleasure from the start to the spectacular ending.”

Starting with its domestic release on the 21st, ‘Gunche’ will begin its sequential global rollout. It is scheduled to meet international audiences in Taiwan and Malaysia on May 22, France, Singapore, and the Philippines on May 27, Australia and New Zealand on June 11, and North America on August 28. A release in Japan is also planned for 2027.
