Music variety shows have officially become steady sellers in the broadcasting world. Because music is a universal language that anyone can enjoy regardless of gender or age, these shows continue to capture the hearts of viewers.

Some programs are seeing impressive results in both ratings and buzz. ‘무명전설’ is recording ratings in the 7 to 8% range (based on national households), while ‘한일가왕전’ is hitting 4 to 5%. According to Fundex’s non-drama TV buzz rankings for the first week of May, ‘무명전설’ and ‘히든싱어8’ ranked 6th and 9th, respectively.
Broadcasters prefer producing music shows because the general appeal of the genre means there is less risk. They are adding a fresh twist by focusing on specific genres like Trot, Ballad, and Hip-hop. An industry insider noted, “Music variety shows allow for linked businesses such as spin-off programs and concerts featuring the cast.”
Pop culture critic Kim Heon-sik emphasized, “In the era of OTT services where you have to watch content with intense focus, music variety shows have the advantage of being less tiring since you can just leave them on and listen.” However, he pointed out, “The problem is that current music programs are limited to competition formats.” He added that if more diverse attempts are made to enjoy music, it will create more room for growth and attract new viewers.
