The power and artistic achievements of Korean cinema proven on screen over the past year will bear fruit once again at this year’s Baeksang Arts Awards. From masters with a heavy presence to the young blood becoming the new center of Chungmuro and ambitious rookies, they will gather at Baeksang, raising the prestige of the ceremony with high attendance. Notably, following the history of the ‘First Staff Grand Prize’ last year, all nominees for the Art Award have accepted their invitations to attend in person, which is a proud point to watch.
The two giants with the most nominations, ‘I Can’t Help It’ and ‘The Man Living with the King’, both nominated in seven categories including Best Work, have confirmed full attendance. For ‘I Can’t Help It’, Director Park Chan-wook, who decided to attend despite a tight schedule as the first Korean Cannes Film Festival Jury President, will be joined by DP Kim Woo-hyung, Lee Byung-hun, Son Ye-jin, Lee Sung-min, and Yum Hye-ran. ‘Team Man Living with the King’, which moved 16.8 million people and shook Korea, will also be seen as a complete group, with Director Jang Hang-jun, Yoo Hae-jin, Yoo Ji-tae, Jeon Mi-do, and Park Ji-hoon enjoying the festival amidst ongoing fan support.
The appearance of the leads from ‘Master of the World’ and ‘Face’, which brilliantly confirmed the power of Korean cinema with meaningful messages, is also noteworthy. ‘Master of the World’ will be represented by Director Yoon Ga-eun, Jang Hye-jin, and Seo Su-bin, while ‘Face’ will feature Director Yeon Sang-ho, Art Director Lee Mok-won, Park Jung-min, and Shin Hyun-bin. Shin Se-kyung and Park Hae-jun from the acclaimed genre piece ‘Humint’ will also add to the charm of Baeksang.
Director Lee Jong-pil, Music Director Lee Min-hwi, Moon Sang-min, and Go Ah-sung from ‘Pavane’, which captivated global audiences with its love-filled cinematic sensibility, will also attend. Go Ah-sung, who is currently appearing in a play, plans to join the ceremony immediately after her performance, showing great affection and loyalty to the work. Director Kim Do-young, Koo Kyo-hwan, and Moon Ga-young from ‘What If We’, which proved the enduring power of Korean melodrama, will also bring their cinematic lingering emotions to Baeksang.
Jang Yong-eun from ‘People and Meat’, a work that expanded the diversity of the film industry with the reality and cheerful rebellion of seniors, will fill Baeksang with his presence, accompanied by Director Yang Jong-hyun and Writer Im Na-mu. Ahn Hyo-seop and Supervisor Kim Woo-cheol from ‘Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint’, which depicted futuristic technology rivaling Hollywood, will also attend. For ‘Good News’, editors Kim Sang-bum and Kim Ho-bin, along with Hong Kyung, show a strong sense of responsibility.
There is also the fresh joy of first-time Baeksang visitors. Director Lee Ran-hee and Yoo Yi-ha from ‘3rd Year 2nd Semester’, and Director Park Jun-ho and Jo Yu-hyun from ‘3670’, enter Baeksang as the future Chungmuro looks forward to. The Rookie Director nominees, whom cinephiles are particularly watching, will all be present. There is great curiosity about who among Director Kwon Yong-jae (‘High Sugar’), Director Kim Su-jin (‘Noise’), Director Kim Yong-hwan (‘Letter of Connection’), Director Park Jun-ho (‘3670’), and Director Jang Byeong-gi (‘When Summer Passes’) will take home the trophy.
The actors representing the works are symbolic in themselves. The leads include Lee Hye-young from ‘Pagwa’, Han Ye-ri from ‘Spring Night’, Shin Sia from ‘Even if this love disappears from the world tonight’, Shin Eun-soo from ‘History of Confession’, Chae Won-bin from ‘Opposition’, and Choi Yu-ri from ‘Zombie Daughter’.
