“A Healthy Addiction Saved Me”: Lee Hyori Opens Up About What 12 Years of Yoga Taught Her

Singer Lee Hyori recently opened up about the transformations she has experienced after practicing yoga for 12 years.

On the 10th, a video titled “Not Hyori, but Ananda. The inner thoughts of yoga teachers…” was uploaded to the YouTube channel ‘Ah Yoga’. In the video, Lee Hyori shared her perspective on living as both a yoga practitioner and an instructor.

When complimented on her beautiful side profile, Lee Hyori jokingly replied, “As you get older, your face spreads sideways. That’s why my side profile looks pretty.” She then brought laughter to the set by avoiding the camera and saying, “Get that away from me!”

Having practiced yoga for 12 years, Lee Hyori emphasized the importance of consistent practice. She noted, “You shouldn’t neglect your practice. Even an amazing teacher becomes a complete student when they come to my class. They do everything they’re told.”

Lee Hyori, who has been running a yoga studio for over six months, explained that every class is different. “The dawn class has many regular members, but the morning class still has a high percentage of trial students,” she said. “Since the people and the atmosphere change every time, I’ve never taught the exact same class twice.”

She added, “The style of the class changes completely depending on the weather, the mood, or who attends. If a complete beginner comes, I adjust it for them.” She reflected, “I think that, in the end, is my own practice.”

She was also honest about why she first started yoga. “At first, I started because I didn’t want my shoulders to hurt anymore. After that, I wanted to show off by doing cool poses. I worked really hard on the flashy movements,” she recalled.

However, her goals shifted over time. Lee Hyori shared, “There are so many experts that I couldn’t really show off. In the end, what remained was living my life safely and without any major trouble.”

“I’m naturally a person with a lot of energy, so if I hadn’t done yoga, where would I have spent all that energy?” she wondered. “Living a simple life, raising dogs and doing yoga, eventually made me feel at peace.”

She further revealed that yoga was the strength that kept her life in balance, stating, “Because I fell into a healthy addiction, I was able to avoid falling into other addictions.”

Lee Hyori also mentioned discovering a sense of consistency within herself through yoga. “I didn’t think I was a consistent person, but through yoga, I’ve come to feel proud of myself,” she said. She added, “I realized that I have the consistency to move forward by practicing every day, even when no one is watching.”

Finally, she shared the deepest change yoga brought her: “It’s really hard to see yourself as beautiful. But once I started seeing myself lovingly, I found that I couldn’t hate others either.”
