The excuse that a “designated driver abandoned the car” didn’t last long. Actor Son Seung-won, who was caught driving the wrong way on Gangbyeonbuk-ro while heavily intoxicated, is now facing a requested sentence of 4 years in prison after allegations surfaced that he tried to have his girlfriend remove the dashcam storage.
According to legal sources on the 14th, Judge Kim Hyung-seok of the Seoul Western District Court will hold the first sentencing hearing for Son Seung-won, who is charged with violating the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving), on June 11th at 2 PM.
During the final hearing, prosecutors requested the court to sentence Son Seung-won to 4 years in prison.
Last November, Son Seung-won was arrested on the spot after driving the wrong way on Gangbyeonbuk-ro for about 2 minutes with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.165%. This level is more than double the license revocation threshold of 0.08%.
Shocking details emerged during the investigation. Allegations were raised that Son tried to hide evidence by telling his girlfriend, “My car is at the Yongsan Police Station, so go and take out the dashcam storage.”
Controversy has intensified as this marks Son Seung-won’s fifth time being caught for drunk driving.
During a previous drunk driving accident in 2018, he claimed that fellow actor Jung Hwi was the one driving. However, the situation reversed when Jung Hwi later revealed, “Actually, Son Seung-won was driving.”
Jung Hwi stated during the police investigation, “Son Seung-won told me, ‘I’ll be severely punished if I get caught this time, so please say you were driving.'”
The controversy didn’t end there. It has been reported that Son Seung-won drove a vehicle without a license on the 8th, just six days before this trial.
While Son Seung-won pleaded for leniency during the trial, attention is now focused on the possibility of a heavy sentence due to his repeated drunk driving, false statements, and attempts to conceal evidence.
