Actress Woo Hyun-joo has shared the heartbreaking news of her cancer recurring and her subsequent departure from her current performance.
On the 13th, Woo Hyun-joo took to her social media to reveal, “I am a cancer survivor who has fought this battle twice before, and I received news yesterday that it has recurred once again.”
Earlier that day, the production team of the play ‘Orphans’ announced that she would be leaving the show after the performance on the 15th due to health reasons, releasing a revised casting schedule. Additionally, Man Theater, the theater company headed by Woo Hyun-joo, announced that the ticket opening for the upcoming play ‘Ghosts’ has been postponed due to internal circumstances.
Explaining her departure from ‘Orphans’, she shared, “I will begin chemotherapy next week. I wanted to stay until the final performance, but because physical strength is such a crucial element for this specific production, I decided to step down before starting treatment. I couldn’t let my own desires make the performance unstable.”
She further explained that she is currently coordinating how to make the upcoming play ‘Ghosts’ happen, which is why she shared the details of her battle. “Since ‘Ghosts’ has a shorter running time and performance period, I believe it’s possible to adjust the schedule after treatment, although it may be shorter than originally planned,” she added.
Woo Hyun-joo expressed her gratitude to fans, saying, “I received so much love through ‘Orphans,’ and the messages telling me that I was ‘encouraging’ actually gave me great strength.” She apologized for not being able to finish the run, adding, “I’m very sad and sorry that I can’t be with you until the end.” She promised to do her best for the remaining shows but asked for understanding, saying, “I’m worried about whether I can manage my emotions well. I hope you’ll be generous even if I or my fellow actors struggle to practice ‘the importance of self-control.’ I sincerely apologize once again for not keeping my promise to the audience. I wish everyone good health.”
