Three key highlights for the movie ‘Gunche’ have been revealed!
Director Yeon Sang-ho’s latest film ‘Gunche’ shared three points to look out for. The movie already received rave reviews at the Cannes Film Festival, being called “formally innovative” with “gut-wrenching tension” and a “new physical grammar for zombies,” making it an unprecedented work in the genre. Critics also praised it as a “non-stop thrill ride” providing “incredible genre pleasure.”
The first highlight is the extreme suspense brought by a new species. Director Yeon Sang-ho has once again perfected the evolution of zombies. The infected in ‘Gunche’ move in groups and update information, delivering a fresh kind of horror through unpredictable behavior and attack patterns. By introducing a new species that is on a different level from traditional zombies, ‘Gunche’ promises intense suspense through the desperate struggle between the evolving infected and the survivors.

The second highlight is the incredible acting ensemble. The cast features Jun Ji-hyun, who returns to the big screen after 11 years as the leader of the survivors, Kwon Se-jung; Koo Kyo-hwan as the genius biologist Seo Young-chul, who triggered the infection; Ji Chang-wook as Choi Hyun-seok, fighting a bloody battle to protect his loved ones; Shin Hyun-bin as Gong Seol-hee, struggling to resolve the situation from outside the building; Kim Shin-rok as Choi Hyun-hee, who reaches out to those in need despite the unfair circumstances; and Go Soo as Han Kyu-sung, Se-jung’s ex-husband, who bravely steps into danger for others.

The third highlight is the production, which maximizes immersion through new motions, visuals, sets, and cinematography. First, the eerie and bizarre signature motions of the infected, created in collaboration with dancers, amplify the tension of the evolving zombies. Additionally, the martial arts team led by director Heo Myung-haeng (known for ‘The Roundup: Punishment’ and ‘Badland’) and the special effects team CELL, led by Hwang Hyo-kyun (who created the look of Korean zombies in ‘Train to Busan’), participated. Combined with realistic large-scale sets, cinematography that makes the audience feel like they are moving with the survivors, and production design that awakens the senses, the film will offer the ultimate screen experience.
‘Gunche’ is scheduled for release in Korea on May 21.
