Actor Choi Jun-yong, who has publicly supported former President Yoon Suk Yeol, recently shared a photo of Starbucks coffee, a brand currently embroiled in controversy over its “Tank Day” marketing.
On the 19th, Choi Jun-yong uploaded a photo of himself enjoying Starbucks coffee to his SNS account with the caption, “Coffee is all about Starbucks.”
He caught the public’s eye by adding the hashtag “Anti-Communist Coffee” to the post.
This comes after Starbucks held a tumbler sale event on May 18, the anniversary of the Gwangju Uprising, using the phrase “Tank Day” in its promotional materials. The event page also featured the phrase “Tak on the desk.”
The term “Tank” drew heavy criticism for evoking memories of the Chun Doo-hwan military junta, which used armored vehicles and military equipment to violently suppress citizens during the May 18 Democratization Movement. Furthermore, the phrase “Tak on the desk” was pointed out for recalling the police’s infamous claim during the 1987 Park Jong-chol torture-death case, where they stated the victim died with a “uk” sound after the desk was hit “tak.”
Meanwhile, Choi Jun-yong debuted as a talent in the 2nd open recruitment of SBS in 1992 and became well-known through dramas such as Temptation of Wife and Rustic Period. In 2024, he publicly supported former President Yoon Suk Yeol regarding the December 3 emergency martial law incident and participated in protests against impeachment.
