It’s been over a decade since the legendary Shin Hae-chul, famously known as ‘Ma-wang’ (Demon King), left us, but the medical malpractice controversy surrounding his tragic passing continues to spark outrage! His incredible legacy in music and philosophy left an irreplaceable void, and fans are still reeling. The fury directed at the surgeon, particularly because the tragedy reportedly involved a surgery performed without consent, simply isn’t fading.
Back in October 2014, the late Shin Hae-chul went to the hospital for abdominal pain. While it was reportedly not an emergency, he ended up undergoing laparoscopic gastrointestinal adhesion lysis and even gastric reduction surgery. The big issue? There are strong suspicions that this entire procedure was done without proper explanation or his consent. Post-surgery, he suffered from high fever, extreme pain, and peritonitis symptoms, and his health quickly took a turn for the worse.

Even after being discharged, the pain didn’t stop. He visited the hospital repeatedly, but sadly, no proper action was taken. Just 10 days after the surgery, he tragically collapsed from cardiac arrest and passed away on October 27 due to hypoxic-ischemic brain damage. The autopsy results were shocking, revealing peritonitis, pericarditis, and sepsis, along with a perforation and foreign material found in his pericardium, intensifying the suspicions of medical negligence.
In fact, his grieving family filed both civil and criminal lawsuits against surgeon Mr. A, asserting that “the surgery was performed without sufficient explanation, even though it wasn’t an emergency.” After a lengthy legal battle, the Supreme Court in 2018 upheld the charge of professional negligence resulting in death, confirming a one-year prison sentence for the surgeon.

But wait, the controversy didn’t stop with the criminal conviction! While a civil lawsuit confirmed a compensation payment of approximately 1.18 billion won (that’s a huge amount!), there are also claims that the bereaved family never actually received the payment. It seems the issue of accountability after the medical accident is still very much on the table.
What’s more, the fact that a doctor’s license can be reapplied for after a certain period following its cancellation under current law has only intensified the debate! The family’s legal representative stressed the urgent need for systemic improvements, pointing out that “the system still makes it incredibly difficult for victims of medical accidents to achieve accountability.”

This heartbreaking case recently resurfaced on TV, reigniting public anger! Discussions once again focused on the possibility of treatments unrelated to the surgery’s purpose and the inadequate response afterward. What’s even more shocking is that similar medical malpractice cases were brought to light. Last October, the YouTube channel ‘Detectives’ Chit-chat’ featured the tragic story of an Australian man who died after six surgeries. The doctor involved reportedly claimed to be the top authority in his field and insisted nothing could have been done even if the patient had gone to the ICU. The bombshell? This very same doctor was reportedly the surgeon who operated on the late singer Shin Hae-chul when he passed away, sending shockwaves through the public!
This isn’t just a personal tragedy; it’s sparking a massive debate about the entire medical system! The death of the late Shin Hae-chul remains a ‘shocking incident’ for countless fans. This recent broadcast is once again shining a spotlight on medical procedures and demanding greater accountability.
