From 5 Months of Headspins to Tanning! Kang Dong Won and Park Ji Hyun Go All Out for 'Wild Thing'

The production report for the movie ‘Wild Thing’ (directed by Son Jae Gon) was held on the 7th at Lotte Cinema Konkuk University in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul. Director Son Jae Gon, along with actors Kang Dong Won, Park Ji Hyun, Um Tae Goo, and Oh Jung Se, attended the event.

‘Wild Thing’ is a comedy film about ‘Triangle’, a three-member co-ed dance group that once dominated the music industry but disbanded overnight due to an unexpected incident. Now, 20 years later, they take a reckless leap to seize a chance at a comeback.

Kang Dong Won returns as ‘Hyun Woo’, the leader and “dance machine” of ‘Triangle’. He will portray a multi-dimensional character, blending the look of a B-boy idol—complete with headspins and end-of-the-century styling—with the poignant daily life of a broadcaster just trying to make a living.

Kang Dong Won shared that he practiced headspins for about five months, saying, “At first, my understanding of hip hop was zero. I didn’t listen to it and didn’t know much about it, but after receiving the script, I thought, ‘How funny would it be if I did a headspin?’ I hoped the audience would find it both pitiful and funny.”

He continued, “I really worked hard. I knew nothing about breakdancing, and I noticed the dancers’ feet hardly touch the ground. It’s a dance that almost defies gravity. I was confused whether it was dancing or gymnastics.” He added, “It’s no exaggeration to say it was the hardest thing I’ve ever learned. I usually practice a lot before filming, but I still feel a bit disappointed this time. I kept thinking, ‘If I had more time to practice, I could have spun at least half a turn more.'”

Um Tae Goo takes on a transformation as ‘Sang Goo’, a rapper with overflowing passion. He stated, “My only wish was to express ‘Sang Goo’ well. While I have an introverted side, I also have an extroverted side.”

He added, “The moments I regretted were when the acting felt lacking or when I didn’t manage to be funny. I approached the role with the mindset that I’d die if I wasn’t cute. I was greatly inspired after watching senior Kang Dong Won practice.”

Park Ji Hyun, who plays ‘Do Mi’, the center and “absolute charm” of ‘Triangle’, revealed, “The ‘Do Mi’ of the past did some tanning. My skin is naturally fair, but I tanned to capture the idol vibe of that era. I also tried to keep the makeup authentic to that time. Since she’s the main vocalist, I worked on projecting my voice with more volume.”
