From Helicopters to Han River Boats! Hwang Hye-young Recalls the 'Two Two Syndrome' Even Seo Taiji Acknowledged

Hwang Hye-young, a member of the 90s co-ed group Two Two, looked back on the explosive popularity of her prime. It was a time when she traveled to her schedules via helicopter, motorcycle, and even a boat on the Han River!

On the May 13th episode of TV Chosun’s ‘Perfect Life’, the original ‘pocket girl’ Hwang Hye-young appeared to share stories about her peak years and her battle with illness.

Recalling her popularity, Hwang Hye-young said, “During my peak, I had 11 to 12 schedules a day.” She surprised everyone by adding, “I used to travel by helicopter and motorcycle, and during rush hour, I even took a boat on the Han River to get to my schedules.”

She also shared an anecdote from a performance at a military base. When comedian Lee Sung-mi asked, “Wasn’t your popularity immense even at military base performances back then?” Hwang Hye-young recalled an unforgettable moment.

She shared, “We performed at the ‘Ujeong’ stage, and Seo Taiji and Boys were the closing act that day, with Two Two performing right before them. As Seo Taiji was coming off stage, he told me, ‘I can’t beat you guys here.'”

Behind the popularity that swept an era, there were also times of declining health.

Hwang Hye-young confessed, “In the past, I ran a shopping mall and had so much work that I couldn’t sleep. I was always sensitive and tense due to stress.” She revealed that this lifestyle led to a diagnosis of meningioma in 2010.

Her husband was her greatest source of strength. Hwang Hye-young said, “That happened just a month after I met my husband. At the time, I didn’t want surgery and just wanted to let it go, but my husband scheduled the surgery, had me hospitalized, and took care of all my nursing.”
