Golden Globes Now Accept AI-Assisted Works! Is This the Start of a New Era?

On the 7th (local time), the Golden Globes revealed the schedule and submission guidelines for the 84th awards. According to the announcement, the 84th Golden Globe Awards will take place on Sunday, January 10, 2027. Nikki Glaser will once again serve as the host.

Submissions will be accepted from June 1 to October 30, and the nominees are scheduled to be announced on December 7.

The new guidelines include specific rules regarding AI. The Golden Globes surprised many by stating, “The use of artificial intelligence (AI), including generative AI, does not automatically disqualify a work. If human creativity and artistic judgment were utilized during the production process and no one’s copyright was infringed, it will be recognized as an official submission.”

The Golden Globes further explained, “AI and similar technologies can be used as part of the production process, but they cannot replace human creativity. Works utilizing AI will undergo a thorough verification process, during which additional information or materials may be requested. Failure to provide the requested information in a timely manner may result in disqualification.”

There were also explanations regarding eligibility for acting and non-acting categories. The awards stated, “Performances submitted in the acting category must result from the actor’s direct work. Eligibility is granted if AI is used to supplement a performance under creative control, but if the acting itself is generated by AI, it will not be eligible. Additionally, disqualification will occur if an actor’s appearance or voice is used without authorization.”
