Goo Kyo-hwan Rejects the Ordinary in 'Gunche'!

Released on the 21st, the movie ‘Gunche’ (directed by Yeon Sang-ho) tells the story of isolated survivors fighting for survival against infected beings that evolve in unpredictable ways inside a locked-down building.

Director Yeon Sang-ho has returned to the zombie genre for the first time in 10 years since ‘Train to Busan’ with ‘Gunche’, teaming up with Goo Kyo-hwan once again. This marks Goo Kyo-hwan’s fourth project within Director Yeon’s universe, following ‘Peninsula’, ‘Parasyte: The Grey’, and the series ‘Goei’, which was written by the director.

In particular, Goo Kyo-hwan’s portrayal of Captain Seo, the villain in ‘Peninsula’, left a lasting impression on movie fans with his sharp and chilling performance. At the time, Director Yeon Sang-ho expressed his deep trust, stating, “If it weren’t for Goo Kyo-hwan, Captain Seo might have just been a character pretending to be tough.”

Since ‘Peninsula’, Goo Kyo-hwan has evolved from an indie film star into an irreplaceable actor who dominates both the big and small screens.

Goo Kyo-hwan is at the heart of the movie’s start. He plays Seo Young-chul, a genius biologist who previously worked at a bio company and yearns for the birth of a new humanity. As the central figure of the infection within the building, he becomes a target for the authorities and survivors after reporting that the vaccine is within his own body.

Goo Kyo-hwan heightens the tension of the film through his “face action,” utilizing unpredictable expressions, gaze, and even his facial muscles. A strange energy permeates every gesture and step, and he leaves a powerful impression with just an eerie smile, even when his eyes are covered.

Seo Young-chul is a character where madness, intelligence, and instability coexist, as he drives the survivors forward believing the infected he created are a new form of humanity. Goo Kyo-hwan delicately expresses these complex emotions, breathing persuasion and life into a character that could have felt flat. As a result, Seo Young-chul serves as a powerful villain who carries the tension of the plot.

Goo Kyo-hwan’s presence, which constantly makes the audience feel uneasy, is one of the strongest weapons of ‘Gunche’. Once again, he has proven his status as an irreplaceable actor. This is why fans are even more excited for the future of the “genre known as Goo Kyo-hwan,” who remains unrivaled on both screen and television.
