SBS’s new variety show ‘법륜로드 : 스님과 손님’ (hereafter ‘스님과 손님’) has officially entered the Netflix TOP 10!
As of May 21, ‘스님과 손님’ ranked 7th in the ‘Today’s Korea TOP Series’ and climbed to 2nd place in the variety category, securing its spot in the TOP 10 right from its first broadcast week. It also recorded a peak minute rating of 3.7% on TV.
Premiering on May 19, ‘스님과 손님’ is a road trip journey of “instant questions and answers” where “national mentor” Venerable Pomnyun and five guests—Noh Hong-chul, Lee Sang-yoon, Lee Ju-bin, Lee Ki-taek, and Woo Chan—seek their “true selves.” The first episode showed the group arriving in Kolkata, a city in northeastern India.
Venerable Pomnyun explained that this journey is “both travel and spiritual practice,” stating, “Travel is seeing and hearing various sights and facts, while practice is observing my own heart, including feelings of joy, anger, and irritation.” He then gave the members a mission: pack only as much as can fit into a ‘barang,’ a small bag monks use for their practice.
In a later interview, Venerable Pomnyun shared the meaning behind the mission, saying, “I believe we should find freedom from the feeling that we only feel secure when we possess many things.” Though hesitant at first, the members eventually let go of their “obsession items” and set off with only their barangs.
Meanwhile, SBS is preparing special reruns of the first episode. It will air on May 23 at 6:10 PM and again on May 24, Buddha’s Birthday, starting at 10:55 AM.
