Singer Hong Ji-yoon has finally spoken out to clear up the rumors that she comes from a wealthy family.
During her appearance as a guest on KBS2’s ‘Malja Show’ on the 4th, Hong Ji-yoon set the record straight.
After recently donating her entire 100 million won prize money from a competition, she expressed her frustration, saying, “There’s something I really want to tell my colleagues. People say I’m a ‘silver spoon,’ but I really am not.”
She continued, “Some say I only donated because I have plenty of money, or that I’m just doing trot as a hobby, but I’m actually broke. I feel like I want to show everyone my bank balance right now just to prove it. I really wanted to tell everyone that it’s not true.”
Kim Young-hee added, “Rumors have been spreading in the industry. There were nuances like, ‘Since she’s a silver spoon, it’s okay even if she doesn’t make it big,'” before asking what kind of “spoon” she actually is.
Hong Ji-yoon jokingly replied, “I’m a plastic spoon, a disposable spoon.” To which Kim Young-hee comforted her, saying, “Plastic spoons are great. They’re the most sought-after!”
Meanwhile, Hong Ji-yoon recently claimed victory on MBN’s ‘Active Singer 3’ (현역가왕3), becoming the 3rd Active Singer. She decided to donate her entire 100 million won prize to elderly people living alone, stating, “Since trot is a genre loved by seniors, I wanted to give that love back to them.”
