“In My 30s, I Was Hwang Dong-man”: Kang Mal-geum Opens Up About Her Struggle With Worthlessness

In a wrap-up interview for the JTBC Saturday-Sunday drama ‘Everyone is Fighting Their Own Worthlessness’, Kang Mal-geum shared, “In my 30s, I was Hwang Dong-man and Park Jung-min.” She revealed, “Back then, every day was a war with myself.”

Kang Mal-geum confessed, “The annoying things Hwang Dong-man does among friends, the moments spent alone, and the innocent defenses Park Jung-min uses to hide his incompetence were all reflections of me.”

Because of this, ‘Everyone is Fighting Their Own Worthlessness’ was more than just a drama for Kang Mal-geum; it was a journey of facing her own past.

She noted, “Both internal and external strength were needed for that war to slowly fade. That process is my most precious story.”

In the series, Kang Mal-geum plays Go Hye-jin, the CEO of a film company who refuses to compromise with power. Though she seems like a cold and firm leader, she is someone who loves people more than anyone.

Kang Mal-geum explained, “A PD is love. I wrote ‘I am love’ in my notebook so I wouldn’t forget.” She added, “I felt that loving ‘sparkling fools’ was this character’s identity.”

She also shared how she designed Go Hye-jin’s inner world, saying, “I imagined a life where movies, work, life, and love had all blended together long ago and could no longer be distinguished.”

Finally, Kang Mal-geum left a message for the viewers.
