The movie ‘Ride in the Back Seat’ (directed by Harry Wrighton) tells the story of Colin, a man who considers himself insignificant, who meets the incredibly charming Ray and awakens to a mysterious world unlike anything he has ever experienced.
Introverted and ordinary Colin happens to cross paths with Ray one day. With a striking appearance that commands attention, Ray is a man of mystery whose profession and background are hard to guess. Despite this, Colin finds himself falling deeply for him, following Ray to the threshold of a new world filled with secrets, rules, and desire.
You might need some mental preparation before watching ‘Ride in the Back Seat.’ If you head to the theater thinking it is just a romance starring Harry Melling, who played Dudley in the ‘Harry Potter’ series, and Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgård, you might be quite surprised.
While it focuses on the romance between two men, it is far more provocative than expected. Rather than simply following the emotions of love, the film features a high level of intensity, exploring power dynamics, dominance and submission, and the psychological shift of a character stepping into an unfamiliar world. Given its niche genre and R-rated nature, it is expected to be a polarizing piece.
That said, the acting is likely to be undisputed. Harry Melling’s transformation is particularly impressive, as he delicately portrays Colin’s complex blend of fear and desire for Ray. Alexander Skarsgård also delivers a powerful presence that makes it clear why Colin is so captivated.
Based on a novel, ‘Ride in the Back Seat’ has already earned international acclaim. It won the Screenplay award in the Un Certain Regard section at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, four British Independent Film Awards, and the Adapted Screenplay award at the Gotham Awards. It opens on the 27th.
