Koo Kyo-hwan Opens Up About His Villain Role in ‘Gunche’: “The Infected Were Like My Children!”

Koo Kyo-hwan Opens Up About His Villain Role in 'Gunche':

The press screening for the movie ‘Gunche’ (directed by Yeon Sang-ho) was held on the 20th at CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall in Yongsan-gu, Seoul. Director Yeon Sang-ho, along with stars Jun Ji-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Shin Hyun-bin, and Kim Shin-rok, attended the event to share various stories.

‘Gunche’ is a film about survivors trapped in a building during a mysterious infection outbreak, fighting against infected beings that evolve in unpredictable ways.

Koo Kyo-hwan, who plays the multi-dimensional villain Seo Young-chul—a character who hides his intentions behind an unreadable expression—shared, “This character experiences a type of interaction and network for the first time.” He further explained, “I tried to use my facial muscles roughly, and when the communication became smoother, I expressed it with just a brief blink.”

He mentioned, “In the final battle with Se-jeong, I used more hand gestures, foot movements, and muscle contractions in a situation where control was lost. The face acting was done strictly under the director’s guidance.” Director Yeon Sang-ho jokingly added, “Among ourselves, we called it ‘magnesium deficiency action’.”

Regarding what he focused on, Koo Kyo-hwan said, “If I were to immerse myself in the infected and Seo Young-chul, I’d call them ‘my children.’ Acting while being behaviorally connected with my children felt very reassuring and was a special experience. I sometimes acted based on inspiration from their performances, and creating a role together was a reassuring, happy, and special experience.” He then brought laughter to the crowd by mimicking a zombie and asking, “Kids, are you doing well?”
