The Korean Film Archive announced on the 7th that it will host a special exhibition called “Title Exhibition – Text, Typography, Moving Image” from May 8 to August 29 at the Korean Film Museum, exploring the history of Korean cinema through its movie titles.
The exhibition analyzes approximately 8,400 titles, ranging from the first Korean film “The Righteous Vomit” (1919) to works released last year, bringing them to life through animations, videos, and graphic designs.
Directors Lee Sang-hwa, Han Byeong-ah, and Kim Tae-yang participated in the visualization process. Additionally, poster design studios “Studio Bitnaneun,” “When Spring Flowers Bloom,” and “Propaganda” will showcase the production processes of their representative works.
The analysis revealed that the most frequently used word in Korean movie titles is “Love,” appearing in 197 films. The Korean Film Archive explained that this highlights how Korean cinema has developed with a focus on relationship-driven narratives and melodramas.
Following “Love,” other common words include “Woman” (172 films), “Night” (124 films), “Youth” (77 films), “King” (69 films), “Man” (67 films), “Sana-i” (67 films), “Flower” (63 films), “Road” (61 films), and “Person” (56 films).
The exhibition is expected to be a wonderful opportunity to experience the cultural trends and sensibilities of different eras through movie titles. Admission is free!
