Mukbang YouTuber Sanghaegi has personally admitted to three separate DUI offenses and offered his apologies.
On the 10th, Sanghaegi uploaded a video to his channel titled “Hello, I am Sanghaegi Kwon Sang-hyuk.” This marks his first upload in approximately seven months since the controversy began.
Appearing in a white tracksuit, Sanghaegi bowed his head, stating, “I drove under the influence last September. This was my third time being caught, following incidents in 2020 and 2021.” He added, “I am well aware that I have caused great disappointment and pain to those who trusted and supported me.”
Explaining the situation, he said, “I got behind the wheel with the complacent thought that the distance was short and that I felt sober. I am deeply reflecting on how dangerous and irresponsible my actions were.” He further promised, “I will not make excuses. I did something that deserves criticism. I will completely change my way of life and live carrying the weight of my guilt for the rest of my life.”
Despite the apology, public sentiment remains cold. Comments on the video and across the internet include reactions such as, “It looks like he’s slowly trying to make a comeback,” “He’s back after the ‘promised’ few months,” “I was a fan, but not this time,” and “Three times isn’t a mistake, it’s a habit.”
Some netizens expressed even stronger criticism, saying, “I hadn’t unsubscribed before, but I’m doing it now,” and “Isn’t this apology too late, especially since he even refused the breathalyzer test?”
Sanghaegi is accused of driving under the influence from Gangnam-gu to Songpa-gu in Seoul last September. Police responded to a report of suspected DUI, and it is reported that Sanghaegi fled for about 300 meters after stopping his vehicle.
