Park Geun-hyung Returns to 'The Merchant of Venice' After 67 Years: From Naive to Mature

Park Geun-hyung has opened up about the experience of taking on the same role after 67 years!

During a press conference for the play ‘The Merchant of Venice’ (directed by Oh Kyung-taek) held on May 12 at Seokyeong Square in Daehak-ro, Seoul, Park shared his thoughts on joining the cast.

At 85 years old, Park Geun-hyung takes on the role of the Jewish moneylender ‘Shylock’. The fact that he is returning to this role after approximately 67 years has already become a hot topic.

During the event, Park remarked, “I wonder how much time has passed. When I played Shylock as a student, I expressed the character however I wanted. Now, while I can’t say it’s perfect, I am putting in every effort to create a truly wonderful play.”

He continued, “How should I act Shylock after 60 years? I might have portrayed him naively or innocently when I was young, but now I am focusing on the expression as a true actor and artist.”

He added, “I will work hard to present the role with more maturity and confidence than I did back then.”

Meanwhile, ‘The Merchant of Venice’, one of Shakespeare’s most famous comedies, will run from July 8 to August 9 at the National Theater of Korea’s Haeoreum Theater.
