Prosecutors have requested a 10-year prison sentence for a man in his 30s who was brought to trial for breaking into the home of actress Nana, a former member of the group After School, to commit robbery.
On May 19, the Namyangju Branch of the Uijeongbu District Prosecutors’ Office requested a 10-year sentence for Kim (34), who was indicted on charges of robbery and causing injury.
The prosecution stated, “The defendant entered a residence while carrying a weapon and threatened the female victims.” They added, “Since the victims are still suffering from mental distress, severe punishment is necessary,” noting that the defendant has denied the charges and shown no remorse.
On the other hand, Kim denied the robbery charges. His lawyer argued, “It is true that he trespassed at night with the intent to steal, but there was no intention to rob.” They also claimed there is a lack of objective evidence that he was carrying a weapon.
In his final statement, Kim repeated his position, saying, “I sincerely apologize to the victims. I will never commit a crime again,” while adding, “I admit to the trespassing and attempted theft, but I did not commit robbery.”
Kim was arrested and indicted for breaking into Nana’s home in Guri, Gyeonggi Province, around 6 PM on November 15 last year, where he threatened Nana and her mother and demanded money. It was reported that Nana and her mother suffered injuries requiring 21 to 33 days of treatment after being strangled and assaulted. However, Kim was subdued at the scene, and the robbery attempt failed.
During the third hearing on the 21st of last month, Nana appeared as a witness. She showed an emotional reaction, telling the defendant, “Is this fun? Look me straight in the eye.” She also spoke about her trauma, saying, “Since this incident, my home no longer feels like a safe space.” It was heartbreaking to hear her reveal, “I even carry self-defense spray when I go out to get a delivery.”
Meanwhile, the sentencing hearing for Kim will take place on the 9th of next month at the Namyangju Branch of the Uijeongbu District Court.
