Recognized at Cannes! Korean Movie 'Gunche' Set for Huge Success with an Insane Cast

The movie ‘Gunche’ has gained global recognition after being officially invited to the Midnight Screening section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival!

Actors Jun Ji-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Shin Hyun-bin, and Kim Shin-rok, along with Director Yeon Sang-ho, will walk the red carpet on Friday, May 15th, at 12:30 AM (May 16th, 0:30 AM) local time for the official invitation of ‘Gunche’ to the Midnight Screening section.

Director Yeon Sang-ho and the lead stars—Jun Ji-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Shin Hyun-bin, and Kim Shin-rok—are set to light up the red carpet and the official screening at the Grand Théâtre Lumière on May 15th at 12:30 AM (May 16th, 0:30 AM) local time. Already dubbed the “most anticipated work of the first half of the year” thanks to its powerhouse casting and the involvement of “Zombie Master” Director Yeon Sang-ho, ‘Gunche’ is expected to capture the attention of global press and film industry professionals at its world premiere.

‘Gunche’ tells the story of isolated survivors trapped in a building locked down by a mysterious infection, fighting against infected beings that evolve in unpredictable ways. This marks Director Yeon Sang-ho’s fourth invitation to the Cannes Film Festival, following ‘The King of Pigs’ (2012, Director’s Fortnight), ‘Train to Busan’ (2016, Midnight Screening), and ‘Peninsula’ (2020, Official Selection). Having left a strong mark on the global film scene with his unique twists on the Korean zombie genre, expectations are high that he will once again prove the strength of Korean cinema through ‘Gunche’.

The actors, making their first Cannes red carpet appearance with ‘Gunche’, shared their excitement. Jun Ji-hyun said, “I am truly happy and honored to be invited to the Cannes Film Festival, where filmmakers from all over the world gather. I am thrilled to present my first project with Director Yeon Sang-ho on such a meaningful stage. I will do my best to show the power of Korean genre films to audiences worldwide. Please give us lots of support and interest.” Koo Kyo-hwan added, “I am curious about how our film will resonate with local audiences across the distance of time and space. I want to communicate deeply with the audience in Cannes, where there is so much passion for film, and fully enjoy those precious moments.” Ji Chang-wook expressed, “I am glad to be part of the Cannes Film Festival, a global celebration of cinema, with ‘Gunche’. I will do my best to promote the film so that the efforts of not only the actors but all the staff who dedicated themselves to the work can shine brightly on the world stage. Please cheer us on.” Shin Hyun-bin shared, “The first meeting with the audience is always exciting and nerve-wracking, so I am even more thrilled that it begins at the Cannes Film Festival. I hope you look forward to the meeting with Korean audiences that will follow.” Kim Shin-rok said, “I am happy and honored to be part of the world premiere of ‘Gunche’ in the home of cinema. I hope ‘Gunche’ leaves a deep impression on the filmmakers from around the world gathered in Cannes.”
