Park Joo-ah entered the entertainment world after passing the first-ever open recruitment talent exam for KBS in 1961, making her a true first-generation recruited actress in Korea. She was one of only 26 selected from over 2,600 applicants, debuting alongside legendary actors like Kim Hye-ja and Jung Hye-sun.
From the very beginning of her career, she showcased deep acting skills by specializing in elderly roles. She naturally portrayed grandmothers even in her 20s and crossed between the stage and screen, winning the Dong-a Theater Award for the play ‘Mangnani’. She remained a beloved presence for a long time through numerous works, including dramas like ‘Yeoro’, ‘On Air’, ‘City Hall’, ‘Life is Beautiful’, and ‘I Trusted a Man’.
Having remained single throughout her life to fully dedicate herself to her craft, she walked the path of an actress silently for nearly 50 years. In her final project, the MBC drama ‘I Trusted a Man’, she left a lasting impression on viewers as a warm and loving grandmother.
In 2011, Park Joo-ah was diagnosed with early-stage renal cell carcinoma and underwent kidney removal surgery. However, her condition worsened due to complications, and she passed away on May 16 of the same year. While her bereaved family raised suspicions of medical malpractice at the time, prosecutors eventually cleared the medical staff, stating that negligence was difficult to prove.
