According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticket network, ‘Salmokji’ surpassed 3.15 million viewers as of today (the 17th). This means it has finally broken the record of ‘A Tale of Two Sisters’, which held the title of the highest-grossing horror film for a whopping 23 years!
‘Salmokji’ (Directed by Lee Sang-min, Produced by The Lamp) tells the story of a filming team that heads to a reservoir after a mysterious figure is spotted on a road view, only to encounter something terrifying in the deep, dark waters. With massive support from Gen Z, ‘Salmokji’ has achieved long-term success, passing the 3 million viewer mark and officially establishing itself as a representative Korean horror masterpiece.
Even as it enters its 6th week of release, ‘Salmokji’ continues to prove its power by staying high in the box office rankings. On the 16th, it drew 38,827 viewers, ranking 4th overall.
How far will this winning streak go? With Showbox’s new release ‘Gunche’ opening on the 21st, ‘Salmokji’ may soon be making its exit from theaters. From Director Lee Sang-min’s first feature film to the actors making their horror debuts, this fresh ensemble has signaled a generational shift in the horror genre and breathed new life into theaters. Everyone is waiting to see what the final score will be for this legendary hit, which is still screening in theaters!
