Channel A’s ‘Now on My Way to Meet You’ will air a heart-wrenching story of a North Korean mother and daughter reuniting after years of not knowing if the other was even alive.
Back in 2019, Lee Yun-mi appeared on the show with a desperate wish to find her mother, whom she had been separated from since she was just 7 years old. At the time, the only clues Yun-mi had were her mother’s name, hometown, and a single scar on her nose.
Yun-mi’s heartfelt wish that her mother be “healthy and happy if she is still alive” left the entire studio in tears.
Six years later, a miracle happened! A friend of the mother, who was living at Hanawon, happened to see a rerun of the episode and remarked, “She looks like your daughter.”
After confirming the broadcast, the mother exclaimed, “Yes, that’s my daughter!” After searching for her, she finally got in touch with Yun-mi, leading to a dramatic reunion after 24 long years.
This upcoming episode will reveal the tear-jerking reunion for the first time.
The show will also share the story of Kim Eun-jung, who defected alone at the age of 19 and eventually led her entire family to South Korea.
Eun-jung left a single letter for her parents saying she “wanted to treat them to white rice” before heading to China. She worked tirelessly at saunas, restaurants, and fish farms to send money back to her family.
She eventually decided to move to South Korea after hearing that “if you work hard in Korea, you can buy your own house and car.”
Interestingly, her mother, Lee Mi-ja, was a passionate educator in North Korea who taught the history of the Kim family. She initially strongly opposed the move, asking, “Why would you go to an enemy state?” but was eventually persuaded by her daughter’s persistence.
From the terrifying moment she almost drifted away while crossing the deep Tumen River to the episode where she mistook clouds for something else on her first-ever flight, Lee Mi-ja’s turbulent journey will be revealed.
Channel A’s ‘Now on My Way to Meet You’ airs on the 24th at 8:50 PM.
