Song Eun-i Opens Up About Religious Conflict With Her Mother: “My Buddhist Mom Eventually Converted!”

Song Eun-i Opens Up About Religious Conflict With Her Mother:

Comedian Song Eun-i recently opened up about the religious conflict she faced with her mother.

On the 18th, a video titled “Why did Song Eun-i start going to church?” was uploaded to the YouTube channel “Lee Sung-mi’s Motganda.”

Song Eun-i shared that she suddenly felt the urge to attend church and started going after following Choi Kang-hee. However, her mother was a Buddhist at the time. Song Eun-i recalled, “The first thing I did after starting church was rip off all the talismans in my room. My mom had put them everywhere, even on the furniture and my pillow.” She added, “I hid my baptism certificate because attending church was unthinkable in our house. I was going in secret, but my mom found the certificate while cleaning my room.”

“My mom flipped out,” Song Eun-i said. “When I told her I was attending church and had been baptized, she asked how I could do this. I felt terrible after our big argument.” While worrying about the situation, the late Deacon Kim Ja-ok asked her how she was doing. Song Eun-i explained that her mother was very angry. Kim Ja-ok responded, “God wouldn’t like it if your parents’ hearts are uncomfortable.” Song Eun-i admitted she wasn’t sure if that meant she should stop going to church or keep going.

“She didn’t give me a direct answer and just left it at that,” Song Eun-i shared. “Still, because of that sentiment, I apologized to my mom. I told her I wouldn’t do things she hated, and then I continued going to church in secret,” she added, bringing laughter to the show.

Eventually, her mother naturally came to accept her. Even when her father passed away, they held a Christian funeral. However, Song Eun-i noted, “My mom insisted on performing the 49-day Buddhist ritual. When I asked how it worked, she said you just give money to the temple. I agreed just because I wanted my mother to feel at peace.” She revealed, “While the whole family gathered, I sat in the back and prayed continuously to the sound of the moktak (wooden fish drum), asking God to save everyone there and lead them to faith. Now, everyone who was there attends church, including my mother.”
