Former SISTAR member Soyou has revealed the emotional behind-the-scenes stories of her hit songs.
On the May 7 broadcast of SBS Power FM’s “12 o’clock with Joo Hyun-young,” Soyou and Hong Isak appeared as guests.
During the show, Joo Hyun-young mentioned hearing that Soyou has a jinx where her songs become hits only if she cries during recording. She noted that Soyou cried while recording “Too Kind” after breaking up with her boyfriend, as well as during “Some” and “Officially Missing You, Too.”
When Joo Hyun-young asked why she cried during “Officially Missing You, Too,” Soyou explained, “There was an idol wrestling competition the day before. As an idol, I couldn’t just stand there without cheering, or I’d get in trouble. I went and shouted ‘Win!’ so much that I lost my voice. Since I had the lowest recognition within SISTAR, it was a golden opportunity, but the organizers suddenly told me to forget about it because my voice wouldn’t come out. I asked for a moment, cried, drank some warm soup, and then started from the chorus.”
Soyou also shared about “Some,” mentioning there were about 6 or 7 writers involved. She revealed that the iconic line “You’re like mine, but not mine, but like mine” didn’t happen instantly. “They kept telling me ‘Try this’ and ‘Try that,’ making me feel like a human machine, which was exhausting and frustrating. Everything was prepared so quickly that I wondered, ‘Will this actually work?'”
Regarding “Too Kind,” Soyou clarified, “It wasn’t so much because of my boyfriend, but rather that the lyrics really hit home.” She added, “I was crying in the recording booth, and they told me, ‘Soyou, you need to cry for this part.’ Since I was hidden from view, they didn’t know. I told them, ‘I’m already crying.’ I cried a lot. I wasn’t feeling well, and everything just combined to make me tear up.”
