Director Yeon Sang-ho, who kicked off the global K-zombie craze with ‘Train to Busan’, has reached the absolute peak of the genre with ‘Gunche’. He has once again proven why he is rightfully called the ‘Zombie Master’!

Opening on May 21, the movie ‘Gunche’ (Directed by Yeon Sang-ho) tells the story of survivors trapped in a locked-down building during a mysterious infection, fighting for their lives against infected beings that evolve in unpredictable ways.

The film already created a buzz after being officially invited to the Midnight Screening section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival. Local critics praised it for its “new physical grammar,” “gut-wrenching tension,” and “non-stop thrills from start to finish,” culminating in a 7-minute standing ovation.

What makes ‘Gunche’ truly special is the way the zombies evolve. These are the most powerful zombies in Director Yeon Sang-ho’s universe. While the zombies in ‘Train to Busan’ brought terror through instinct and speed, the infected in ‘Gunche’ move as one massive organism. Much like bees orbiting a queen, the infected connected to ‘Seo Young-cheol’ (played by Koo Kyo-hwan) think and evolve as a collective.

Director Yeon Sang-ho explained, “The work started from the operating principles of AI. I felt that as collective intelligence grows stronger, individual human identity becomes powerless.” In the film, the infected share information and learn, becoming stronger in real-time. They don’t just rush in; they think and move strategically. The most intelligent and threatening K-zombies have been born, leaving viewers with a lingering fear of how such powerful beings could ever be defeated.

Standing firm against this tide is the protagonist ‘Kwon Se-jeong’, played by Jun Ji-hyun. Known for her incredible action skills, she delivers a passionate performance that keeps the audience glued to the screen. With her signature charisma and action, she convincingly portrays a righteous and strong-willed character.

On the other hand, Koo Kyo-hwan, who plays the scientist ‘Seo Young-cheol’ at the center of the crisis, exudes an overwhelming presence with his eerie and unpredictable energy. His performance, a blend of madness, humor, and discomfort, has even earned him the title of the “Korean Joker”.

Interestingly, the real protagonist of this film is the ‘Gunche’ (the colony) itself. Director Yeon Sang-ho revealed that he collaborated with modern dancers to visualize the abstract concept of collective intelligence. As a result, the movements of the infected are completely different from traditional zombie movies. Their eerie, writhing movements, dominating the screen like one giant organism, are truly awe-inspiring.

Having etched K-zombies into the global consciousness with ‘Train to Busan’, Director Yeon Sang-ho has once again proven the evolution of the genre through ‘Gunche’. It leaves us wondering if any other zombie film could possibly top this. The movie is rated 15+.
