Defconn was absolutely shocked to hear that a tuna in Japan was auctioned off for a staggering 4.7 billion won.
In the 4th episode of SBS’s “Choigang Road – Sikpoiler” aired on May 12, Chef Choi Kang-rok, Chef Kim Do-yoon, Defconn, and guest Chef Jung Ho-young embarked on a tuna road trip to Yokjido.
Tuna lover Choi Kang-rok explained the reason for their visit, stating, “Tuna farming is done in Yokjido, Korea. I understand they’ve succeeded in farming tuna there and are even selling them.”
This journey was dubbed Choi Kang-rok’s “Tuna Tour of Desire.” Jung Ho-young shared his expertise, saying, “I’ve used Yokjido tuna before. It’s great. The richness is different. Farmed tuna is actually much fattier and tastier than wild tuna because they’re fed only wild sardines and mackerel. They’re much plumper.” Defconn jokingly added, “Coming from someone as ‘rich’ as you, that’s actually quite convincing.”
Choi Kang-rok noted, “Tuna are somewhat sad fish. From the moment they’re born, they can’t rest for a single second. They receive oxygen by swimming, so the moment they stop, they die. They are the fastest and most expensive fish in the world. A tuna auctioned in Oma was 4.7 billion won.”
Stunned by the 4.7 billion won price tag, Defconn asked, “Is it actually worth that much, or is it symbolic?” Chef Jung Ho-young explained that it is symbolic, adding, “I would distribute this tuna across my branches. It’s a way to attract customers,” highlighting its marketing value.
