Your Wish is Granted, But the Price is Your Life in Netflix's New Occult Thriller 'Kirigo'

When a wish comes true, death follows.

On the afternoon of the 3rd, the Netflix original series ‘Kirigo’ was introduced on MBC’s ‘Departure! Video Travel’.

Se-ah (played by Jeon So-young), a second-year track and field athlete at Seoin High School, is in a secret relationship with her neighbor Geon-woo (played by Baek Seon-ho). Their ordinary lives are shaken by the strange behavior of their classmate Hyeong-uk (played by Lee Hyo-je), who suddenly scores a perfect mark on a math test despite having average grades.

When friends ask for his secret, Hyeong-uk recommends an app called ‘Kirigo,’ claiming that any wish will come true if you enter your fortune (Saju) and name and send a wish video. A 24-hour timer starts with a notification. At that moment, no one knew that the timer was actually a signal of death.

Meanwhile, Geon-woo, who had been spending sweet moments with his girlfriend Se-ah, finds himself unable to see her due to a weekend training schedule. Half-joking and half-serious, he wishes on Kirigo for “Se-ah’s training to be canceled.” The next day, Hyeong-uk begins to have seizures with bizarre movements during class and ends up taking his own life.

The students are left in shock. Just then, the track coach informs Se-ah that training has been canceled due to Hyeong-uk’s incident, leading them to realize that the app took Hyeong-uk’s life as the price for granting Geon-woo’s wish. Geon-woo, Se-ah, and their friends call upon hacking expert Ha-jun (played by Hyun Woo-seok) to try and delete the app. However, Geon-woo cannot escape the app’s curse, and Se-ah uses Kirigo to wish for “Geon-woo to be saved.”

As if by magic, Geon-woo wakes up from unconsciousness after Se-ah’s wish. Simultaneously, a 24-hour timer begins. To save Se-ah, Ha-jun asks for help from his older sister Haet-sal (played by Jeon So-ni), who is a shaman. Along with her boyfriend Bang-ul (played by Noh Jae-won), who is also a shaman, they prepare a ritual to break the app’s curse.

‘Kirigo’ is an occult thriller about high school students who are predicted to die suddenly due to the curse of a wish-granting app and their struggle to escape it. The series is directed by Park Yun-seo, co-director of the hit series ‘Moving,’ and stars Jeon So-young, Baek Seon-ho, Lee Hyo-je, Hyun Woo-seok, and Jeon So-ni.

Lead actress Jeon So-young reportedly gained about 10 to 11kg for her role. In a media interview, she said, “Since I have a very slim build, I was asked to increase the size of my thighs and overall body.” She added, “There wasn’t enough time to gain it through muscle alone, so I increased my food intake. The director often called me to buy me delicious food, and I ate a lot of late-night snacks with the other actors.” ‘Kirigo’ is available to watch on Netflix.
