ZEROBASEONE (ZB1) is back at the starting line, ready for a fresh start! Even though nearly half of the members departed after their project activities concluded, the remaining members decided to continue as ZEROBASEONE. Their reason was simple: they wanted to stay together.
ZEROBASEONE is set to turn a new page with their sixth mini-album, ‘ASCEND-‘, marking their first release as a 5-member group. Despite the big changes, the members shared, “We definitely feel the pressure, but we’re determined to use it as a springboard to keep moving forward!”
ZEROBASEONE, formed through Mnet’s ‘Boys Planet’ in 2023, quickly became a leading 5th-generation group after their debut. They achieved an incredible six consecutive million-selling albums from their debut, with cumulative sales soaring past 9 million, solidifying their presence in the global K-pop scene. However, with the conclusion of their 2-year and 6-month project contract, Zhang Hao, Ricky, Kim Gyuvin, and Han Yujin returned to their original agencies to debut in a new group called ANDERBL. The remaining five members, however, decided to continue their journey as ZEROBASEONE.

‘ASCEND-‘ is their very first release since re-forming as a 5-member group. This album beautifully condenses ZEROBASEONE’s musical journey into a powerful narrative, showcasing their refined identity and exciting new leap forward. Featuring a total of 7 tracks, including the title song ‘TOP5’, the album is packed with diverse genres that truly highlight each member’s unique talents and charm.
Sung Hanbin shared, “While preparing this album, we spent a lot of time thinking about what kind of image the five of us should show. We debated whether to stick to our previous style or present something completely new, but the moment we heard the title track, it was a unanimous ‘yes’ from everyone!”

With this fresh start, the members have taken on even more creative roles in the album! Park Gunwook impressively showcased his musical talents by participating in both the lyrics and composition for the b-side track ‘Customize’. He shared, “Since we’re preparing an album as five members, I felt it would be even more special to include a song created by one of us.” He added, “The members really loved the song, which is why it made it onto the album. Knowing I could contribute to the team makes me incredibly happy!” He also expressed his hope for the future: “I’d love for us to have a song where all the members work on the music together.”
Kim Taerae mentioned, “This album is packed with such a diverse range of colors, it almost feels like there’s no single common thread!” He added, “I hope fans can discover tracks that perfectly match their individual tastes, and also truly feel just how much effort ZEROBASEONE has poured into this album.”

The members also openly discussed the reasons behind continuing as a 5-member group and the pressures they’re facing. Seok Matthew shared, “I really loved being with the members. I never even considered promoting solo.” He emphasized, “I wanted to continue promoting as ZEROBASEONE for as long as we possibly could.”
Park Gunwook stressed, “I truly believe this is our moment to prove ourselves as a five-member group.” He continued, “Instead of letting pressure weigh us down, I want us to use it as motivation and a stepping stone to push forward!” He also explained, “We’re definitely carrying on ZEROBASEONE’s legacy, but since nine members and five members are different, we’re preparing with the mindset of ‘dressing ourselves in new musical and visual clothes’ to show a fresh side.”
Kim Jiwoong shared, “While our biggest concern in the past was the team’s overall identity, now we’re really focused on embracing both the team’s identity and each individual member’s unique colors.” He added, “Every single member is putting in even more effort now.”

The members also shared their exciting goals for this new chapter! Park Gunwook stated, “Starting with this album, we really want to solidify ZEROBASEONE’s unique color and image even further.” Kim Taerae expressed his hope, “I wish our songs would be played everywhere, even continuously in cafes! And of course, I hope we receive tons of love not just in Korea, but from fans all around the world.”
They also shared their determination for the fierce comeback competition happening in May! On the very same day, BIGBANG member Taeyang and NCT’s Taeyong are making their solo comebacks, and ITZY is also returning with a brand new album.
Sung Hanbin confidently stated, “I actually see this as an amazing opportunity to get our name out there even more!” He added, “The thought that we need to show even better performances to be recognized just fuels our passion even more.” Kim Jiwoong echoed this, saying, “It’s truly an honor that our comeback period overlaps with such incredible artists.” He continued, “We’re always so grateful because watching their stages gives us great inspiration and a positive influence.”
