ENA’s drama ‘Scarecrow’ is proving the sheer power of Korean genre storytelling as it becomes a massive hit across Asia!
In the episode 8 finale aired on the 12th, Kang Tae-ju (Park Hae-soo) left Gangseong after being reassigned to Mujin. Just when it seemed the ‘Gangseong serial murder case’ was closed with Im Seok-man (Baek Seung-hwan) confirmed as the culprit, a female body was discovered in Mujin, killed using the exact same method. This shocking twist has sent tension skyrocketing and left fans desperate for the remaining episodes.
As the drama reaches its climax, ‘Scarecrow’ is dominating the charts. According to the weekly chart (May 4 to May 10) released by the leading Asian OTT platform Viu, the series ranked 1st in Indonesia, 2nd in Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia, and 3rd in Hong Kong, securing a spot in the Top 5 across five major Asian countries.
This achievement is especially meaningful as it is a crime thriller succeeding in an Asian OTT market typically dominated by romantic comedies. Analysts suggest that by using the ‘Hwaseong serial murder case’ that shook Korean society in the 1980s as a motif, the show has created a universal connection that transcends language and culture through its insight into human nature and its portrayal of historical tragedy.
The precarious cooperation between Detective Kang Tae-ju and Prosecutor Cha Si-young (Lee Hee-jun), who are tied together by a bitter past from their school days, serves as a major engine driving the dramatic tension. ‘Scarecrow’ is receiving high praise for raising the bar for well-made K-dramas by focusing on the essence of the crime and the pain of the victims, rather than falling into the trap of sensationalism or glorifying crime.
Episode 8, which provided viewers with an incredibly immersive experience, hit a viewership rating of 7.4%. All eyes are now on whether the show can keep this momentum going through the final four episodes.
In episode 9, airing on the 18th, Kang Tae-ju will dive deeper into the truth behind the serial killings that are not over yet, ramping up the tension even further.
