“Stabbing Knives and Breaking Windows”: Yu Hye-ri Opens Up About Her Traumatic 18-Month Marriage

On the 14th, MBN’s ‘Special World’ shared a glimpse into Yu Hye-ri’s daily life, her painful family history, and her journey of living alone after her divorce.

Speaking about her current life with her rescued cats, Yu Hye-ri mentioned, “I prefer being with my cats over things that are complicated and noisy.”

However, her mother still worries about her being alone, telling her, “Don’t just live with cats, go meet a man.”

Yu Hye-ri married actor Lee Geun-hee in 1994, but the marriage ended after just a year and a half. It was a marriage she chose despite her parents’ opposition.

Regarding her decision to marry at the time, she explained, “I felt pressure regarding my age. Back then, there was a feeling that you should be married by thirty. My father was very strict, and I always felt like I was being monitored. I thought I should marry immediately if I found a good person.”

Yu Hye-ri then bravely shared the shocking experiences she endured during her marriage.

She revealed, “(My husband) would stab a knife into the dining table, smash all the apartment windows, and even throw a chair at a random person while drunk at a wrap-up party for a recording.”

She added, “He wasn’t normal. Seeing those things made me realize I had made a mistake. That’s when I understood why my father had opposed the marriage.”

Yu Hye-ri couldn’t hide her feelings of guilt toward her parents.

She broke down in tears, saying, “I think I caused them a lot of heartache. I should have shown them a better side of me. I couldn’t show them that I was happy.”

She also spoke honestly about remarriage. Yu Hye-ri confessed, “I’ve tried matchmaking and put in the effort. But there is such a thing as trauma. I have a prejudice that it’s dangerous to just meet and live with someone easily.”

Born in 1963, Yu Hye-ri debuted as an MBC public recruitment actress in 1988.
