The short-drama project ‘Director’s Arena’ is stealing the spotlight in the content industry ahead of its premiere on the 15th! With a huge lineup of actors, drama directors, and even music video directors, it is being hailed as a fresh experimental playground for video content, going way beyond a simple short-form competition.
According to production company Epic Storm, a total of 33 directors selected through an open call are diving into the first round. What is really exciting is that current actors are stepping behind the camera! Actors Lee Joo-seung, Lee Yu-jin, Choi Gwi-hwa, Ha Su-ho, Lee Beom-gyu, and Ahn Mi-na are all competing as directors.
Some heavy hitters from the content world have also joined the fray. The list includes Director Han Su-ji, known for the web drama ‘A-TEEN’ (Seasons 1 and 2) which racked up 600 million views, Director Park So-rang, who created popular platform hits, and Director Yang Kyung-hee, often called the “Bong Joon-ho of the BL world.” Adding to the hype, a drama PD from a terrestrial broadcaster and Director Jung Joo, who has experience directing BTS music videos, are also participating.
Industry insiders view this project as a perfect example of where the short-drama market is heading. While most short-form content usually focuses on fast pacing and provocative plots, ‘Director’s Arena’ stands out by having experienced directors compete for both artistic quality and mainstream appeal.
It is also notable that directors from the film and drama industry are officially entering the short-drama scene. Thanks to the advantage of spreading quickly across online platforms with relatively low production costs, short dramas are rapidly emerging as a hot new market.
‘Director’s Arena’ premieres on the 15th at 11 PM on ENA and will air every Friday at the same time.
