Trot singer Shin Seong recently shared some heartfelt feelings about his father.
Shin Seong and Park Gyu-ri appeared as guests on the “Shining Guest Seat” segment of KBS 2 Radio Happy FM’s “Eun Ga-eun’s Shining Trot” on May 21.
During the show, DJ Eun Ga-eun asked about the relationship between the two, to which they replied, “You could say we are practically family.” Park Gyu-ri explained that they have been together from their previous agency to their current one and share all their secrets. She added, “When Shin Seong was debating whether to appear on survival auditions, I told him he absolutely had to do it. Now, he has become an even bigger star than I am.” Shin Seong joked, “I have four older sisters, so you can think of Park Gyu-ri as another step-sister. My parents would probably accept it even if she changed her name to ‘Shin Gyu-ri’ now. She is a wonderful sister who always helps me a lot.”
Park Gyu-ri also opened up about her past, revealing that before debuting as a singer, she worked as a civil servant for the Daegu Metropolitan City Gugak Orchestra and as a university lecturer. She shared that while she was busy preparing for her doctorate, she was diagnosed with a cerebral hemorrhage at the young age of 34. She recalled a time in her 20s when she filled in as a chorus singer for Drunken Tiger’s “I Want You,” and explained that after facing a life-threatening crisis, she missed the stage so much that she released an album using her own money. She further revealed that her connection with the military from her time as a lecturer eventually led to her appearance on the female special of “Real Men.”
Shin Seong talked about his pre-debut office life, noting that he was the “mood maker” at company dinners. He shared that being recognized for his skills by his manager at the time inspired him to dream of becoming a singer, and he later gained public recognition by winning five times on “AM Plaza – Challenge Dream Stage.” When DJ Eun Ga-eun asked if he was currently dating, he sighed and said, “Right now, I’m in a position where I can’t afford to be picky.” Park Gyu-ri added to the laughter in the studio, joking that Shin Seong’s need for a relationship is so urgent that people even ask if he likes men.
On a more serious note, Shin Seong shared that his father’s thyroid cancer recurred in March after seven years, and he went through a lot of emotional distress until his father’s recent surgery. He told listeners, “Fortunately, the surgery went well, so I can finally breathe a sigh of relief. I’m glad my father’s expression has brightened,” receiving warm support from the audience.
