Actor Jang Dong-ju, who previously caused concern due to phone hacking and massive debts, has declared his retirement. While he has remained tight-lipped about the truth of the matter, he has already begun taking steps to move on, including selling his art center.

On the 15th, Jang shared a heartfelt message: “I have received so much love and support while living as an actor. Every moment I laughed and cried in front of the camera was the brightest time of my life. As of today, I intend to step down from my life as actor Jang Dong-ju.”

Having debuted in the 2012 play ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, Jang gained attention through dramas like ‘School 2017’, ‘Mr. Temporary’, ‘I’ll Be Your Night’, ‘Trigger’, and ‘I’m Human from Today’, as well as films like ‘Honest Candidate’, ‘Count’, and ‘Handsome Guys’. Because of his rising profile, this sudden announcement has left many in shock.

Some speculate that his retirement is linked to the phone hacking and heavy debts he recently faced. Back in January, Jang revealed he was a victim of hacking and blackmail, stating, “I found out my phone was completely hacked. I borrowed money by any means necessary, and my family even sold their house for me. Due to the urgent debts, more debts piled up, and I lost billions of won, leaving me buried in debt.”

Because Jang had shown a strong will to continue by appearing in ‘I’m Human from Today’ and signing with a new agency, the sudden retirement is even more surprising. It has also been reported that he did not discuss this decision with his agency.

While his agency is reportedly trying to reach him to confirm the truth and background of the announcement, they have been unsuccessful. However, Jang did speak briefly with OSEN, saying in a calm voice, “Please leave your questions via text and I will answer. I am currently having a meal with my family, so it is difficult to talk on the phone.” OSEN sent questions regarding the validity of his retirement and whether he might reverse the decision, but no response has been received yet.

Meanwhile, Jang announced the sale of the art center he has operated since 2020. Describing it as a “complex cultural space that brought youthful energy to Sharosu-gil through various performances by many artists,” he mentioned he is looking for a quick transfer of rights and asked interested parties to contact him via DM or directly.

He also revealed that he has written a scenario based on the pain and reality he experienced over the past year. He is currently seeking partners, including production investment and angel investors, for the movie ‘Natural Nine’. Jang explained, “It is a crime thriller scenario written by adding cinematic fiction to my own experiences. Starting with this scenario, I plan to challenge myself in writing, producing, and eventually directing.”

Following the announcement, fans have sent their support, saying, “I know you’re going through a hard time, but please stay strong,” “I hope only happy things happen to you regardless of what you do,” and “You were a wonderful actor, and I sincerely root for your future path.”
