Public fatigue is growing as celebrities’ daily actions keep sparking controversies. Since every word and move from a star can cause a huge ripple, even in the smallest daily moments, criticism is often inevitable. However, there are growing concerns about the culture of mockery and personal attacks that persist even after a sincere apology.
Actress Kim Bin-woo recently found herself in hot water during a late-night live stream. While singing along to fast-tempo music, a viewer expressed concern about noise between floors, to which she replied, “I’m on the first floor.” The clip went viral on online communities and SNS, with some netizens pointing out that noise can still travel through walls and pillars even from the first floor.

As the backlash grew, Kim Bin-woo apologized on SNS, stating she was “deeply reflecting.” But the heat didn’t die down easily. Some netizens even left malicious comments on a Parents’ Day post featuring her parents and children. While some pointed out she should have been more careful, many comments were personal attacks targeting family members who were completely unrelated to the issue.

Actress Ki Eun-se also faced backlash recently over construction at her home in Pyeongchang-dong after a neighbor raised issues. A neighbor, “A,” posted online complaining that construction vehicles were blocking the alley, making it hard for residents to pass, and that the area was filled with dust and construction waste without proper cleaning.
Ki Eun-se apologized through her agency and tried to resolve the situation by sharing her DM conversations with “A.” While things seemed to calm down due to her immediate response, she later posted on SNS, “I’ve also lived in front of a construction site for a year and a half” and “I wish it were a warm world,” which sparked mixed reactions. Some felt she was just venting her frustrations, while others criticized her attitude as inappropriate following an apology.

Back in February, actress Kim Ji-ho sparked a controversy after posting a photo of a book she was reading with underlines in it, which turned out to be a public library book. Netizens called it “behavior beyond common sense.” Kim Ji-ho tried to fix the situation, offering to provide a new book or pay for a replacement. However, the criticism dragged on as people began bringing up her unrelated past words and actions.
This trend is driven by how SNS has brought celebrities and the public closer. In the past, stars were seen through limited channels like broadcasts or interviews, but now their private lives and daily routines are shared almost in real-time. This means daily actions spread instantly, and public reactions are just as immediate and intense.
This is why celebrities are expected to be more cautious. With great influence comes great responsibility. When actions cause inconvenience or harm to others—like noise complaints, neighbor disputes, or damaging public property—criticism and problem-solving are necessary because these figures have a strong public impact.
However, there must be a clear distinction between legitimate criticism and emotional attacks. Even if a mistake was made and the person has apologized, dragging in family members, repeatedly bringing up unrelated past behavior, or leaving mocking comments cannot be justified. Pointing out a problem is not a license for personal attacks.
Just as celebrities need a sense of responsibility, the public’s criticism needs a boundary. In an era where every daily action is consumed, stars must be more careful, but the public should also reflect on whether the line between fair pointing-out and excessive hate is blurring.
